Remote Recording Equipment Checkout

The Learning Design & Technologies (LDT) team has a supply of equipment available for recording instructional media remotely.

Before receiving and using the equipment, please visit the Creating Course Videos page and request a video recording consultation with an LDT team member (ldt@interpro.wisc.edu).

The quality equipment listed below, intended to meet most people’s remote recording needs most of the time, is available for checkout and limited-term use. Items may be checked out as a complete kit or individually. See Remote Recording Equipment Checkout and Return Procedures.

Instructions

  1. Remove the green screen from its carrier, unfold it, and extend the accompanying height-adjustable tripod.
  2. The top extender piece of the tripod is spring-loaded. Push the spring to open the clip on the extender and insert the edge of the green screen into the clip and release.
  • Place green screen at least 2-3 ft behind you and adjust lighting on the green screen to minimize shadows.
  • Conduct a test recording to ensure green screen positioning and lighting is appropriate.

Instructions

  1. Rest the green screen on the floor and rotate the feet underneath so that they are at a right angle to the base to prevent tipping.
  2. Release the two clasps on the front and open the carrier lid.
  3. Raise the green screen by slowly lifting by its handle straight up. Gently push down to lower.
  4. To return the green screen into its base, slowly push the top of the green screen straight down.
  5. Clasp the carrier and return the feet to a position parallel to the base.

Lighting

Instructions

  1. Attach an accompanying battery and tripod to each LED panel.
  2. The power switch and dimmer dial are located on the back of the panel.
  3. Recharge batteries in the provided dual battery charger as needed and before returning.

Instructions

  1. Plug in the USB Type-A cable to your computer or connected monitor. (If needed, USB-C adapter options are listed below).
  2. Clip the webcam atop your computer screen or mount on a threaded tripod (not provided).
  3. Open the privacy shutter by sliding the slider bar on top of the webcam.
  4. In Camtasia, select the Logitech webcam as your video input device.
  5. Conduct a test recording.

Instructions

  1. Connect the webcam to your computer using the included USB-C cable and set on your computer monitor or use the included tripod.
  2. Download and install the Insta360 Link software from the Insta360 website.
  3. Once the software is installed, open it and follow the on-screen instructions to set up the webcam.
  4. In the software’s Settings tab, configure the webcam’s resolution, frame rate, and field of view.
  5. Select the AI tracking mode from the software or hold up your palm to the webcam to enable tracking. (Hold up your palm again to stop tracking).
  6. To enable whiteboard mode, stick the included whiteboard recognition markers to each corner of your whiteboard. In the Insta360 Link software, click on the “Whiteboard” button or hold up two fingers to the camera. (Hold up two fingers again to exit whiteboard mode).
  7. In Camtasia, select the Insta360 Link webcam as your video input device.
  8. Conduct a test recording.

Microphones - Select one option

Instructions

  1. Connect the microphone to your computer using the included USB-C to USB-A cable. (If needed, USB-C adapter options are listed below).
  2. Position the microphone nearby (but offscreen) for best audio results.
  3. In Camtasia, select the Bumblebee II as your audio input device.
  4. Conduct a test recording to ensure good audio quality.

Instructions

  1. Connect the microphone to your computer using the included USB cable. (If needed, USB-C adapter options are listed below).
  2. Position the microphone nearby (but offscreen) for best audio results.
  3. In Camtasia, select the Blue Snowball as your audio input device.
  4. Conduct a test recording to ensure good audio quality.

USB-C Adapter Hubs - Select one option

This adapter has one fewer USB port than the EZQuest adapter (below). However, most people will need only 2 USB-A ports, one for the external camera and one for an external microphone.

Instructions

*If you have a newer model computer, you may need a USB-C adapter to use with an external camera and microphone that use an older USB connection type.

  1. Plug the USB-C adapter into your USB-C port on your computer.
  2. Plug in your external microphone and/or camera into the adapter.

Instructions

  1. Adjust padded dividers inside the case to accommodate and protect your selected equipment. Smaller items may also be stored in the organizational panel on the inside cover.
  2. Zip closed and carry by the padded handle or shoulder strap.

Remote Recording Equipment Checkout and Return Procedures

Checkout Procedure

  1. Request a video recording consultation with LDT. We are here to understand your needs help you set up for success.
  2. Schedule a time to meet with an LDT team member (ldt@interpro.wisc.edu) at the Extension Building (432 N. Lake Street, Madison). We will offer equipment options, answer questions, and update the equipment inventory.

Things to consider before picking up equipment:

  • What is your anticipated equipment return date? The preliminary checkout period is 30 days.
  • Is there room in your vehicle for transporting the equipment? (The largest piece of equipment potentially used is a pull-up green screen measuring 5 feet long).
  • Do you have access to the Extension Building or will you need to arrange to be let in?

3. Following equipment pick-up, an LDT team member will email you a list of your selected equipment for reference.

4. Email ldt@interpro.wisc.edu if you have questions regarding the recording equipment setup or use.

 Return Procedure

  1. Schedule a time to meet with an LDT team member (ldt@interpro.wisc.edu) at the Extension Building (432 N. Lake Street, Madison) to return the equipment.
    Please do not drop off equipment outside of this meeting. 
  2. Use the equipment list emailed to you to ensure all equipment is returned.
  3. Please share your recording experience and any lessons learned with the LDT team member.
  4. The LDT team member will sign in the returned equipment to keep our inventory records up-to-date for future users.
